The Training Workshop on Sustainable Bamboo Development in Guyana kicked off

On August 15, the Training Workshop on Sustainable Bamboo Development in Guyana, co-hosted by the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR), Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development of Guyana and the Chinese Embassy in Guyana, successfully kicked off. H.E. GUO Haiyan, Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, together with Ambassador Ali Mchumo, Director General of  INBAR, Hon. Nigel Dharamrall, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, and H.E. Anyin Choo, Guyanese Ambassador to China, attended and addressed the opening ceremony.

The workshop lasts 15 days and is held both virtually and on-site, aiming to raise awareness of stakeholders in Guyana on bamboo and rattan’s roles in social and economic development, and help provide livelihoods and promote well-being for indigenous people, women, and self-employed entrepreneurs by sharing bamboo weaving technologies.

Bamboo and rattan are important non-timber forest resource that play vital roles in poverty alleviation, livelihood improvement, low-carbon growth, and nature-based solutions. Among UN’s 17 SDGs, 7 are directly relevant for bamboo and rattan producing countries and their green economy plans. Bamboo has well-developed whip root system, which can conserve water, improve soil structure and delay flood peaks, serving as natural reservoirs. Bamboo processing industry, such as bamboo furniture, bamboo handicrafts, etc., has relatively high added value. Bamboo maintains a low or even negative carbon footprint during the entire lifecycle, and its products can be completely degraded naturally after use, making them the best substitute for plastics. Recently, China, as INBAR’s host country, jointly launched the Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastic Initiative with INBAR, as one of the deliverables under the framework of GDI.

The development and utilization of bamboo resources can make great contribution to the deversified and sustainable economic development and help better achieve "Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030".
